The invention of the telegraph has completely transformed way of communication between individuals and families. Between 1920’s and 1950’s, radio and TV were two famous inventions that had, and still have up to this day, a huge impact on the social, political and cultural lives. Along with the internet, the two mediums, are still widely used across the world today.

Message
After doing the readings and going over the sources for the Electronics module, I wanted the main message to be radio and television and the influence it has on individuals across the world — not only in that era but now too. I was inspired by the Survey of Communications Study on Wikipedia to create the scene on YouTube for this project. With the evolution of technology, and in this case radio and television, families have changed their traditional and normal schedules in the household in order to fit with the demand of this new technology. After getting advise from the professor that I should relate to the one of the theories more, I focused on the different ways the audience utilized the mediums and the reasonings behind them in hopes that it would reflect the uses and gratifications theory.

Target Audience
Because my blog contains four sites that focus on the Pre-telegraphy, Electronics, Computing and the 21st Century Technology, the intended audience for this project are students who have an interest in the evolution of technology. The students will be able to learn about the advancement of technology through the advancement of design outputs through each module as well as the blog which is showcased in WordPress.

Platform
For the Electronics era, I decided to use Youtube as the platform so that I can familiarize myself more with video design, as it is something that I have an interest in. I thought it would be a good idea to do a Youtube video for this module as it mirrors the topic of broadcasting. I will also have the Youtube video or the video link inside the WordPress blog as well to keep things organized for the course. Click here to jump right to the Electronics site.

Design Considerations
At the beginning, I had planned and considered to do just a YouTube video for this module. While doing the readings, I was inspired by the Survey of Communications study to do the scene of the “modern family” for my video. I considered making a longer video but decided to keep it at just that one scene and to keep the rest inside the blog in order to retain the organization of all four module topics within one platform. This way, the audience would be able to have information on all four topics, with the use of outside platforms all in one blog website.

For editing, I debated between Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro but in the end, decided to go with Premiere Pro because of personal preference and because I think the program works better overall for video editing and exporting videos in the end.

Design Challenges
After receiving feedback from the professor about the WordPress blog, I wanted to make sure that users can navigate through the blog not only sequentially but by specific categories as well.  I have to admit, it took me some time to remember how to edit and customize the side bar on my main page to the different categories within my blogs. I was not sure how to add different tags to each blog so I had to do some research online for this. It turned out to be quite easy in the end. I do plan on adding more tags to the side bar as the semester goes on. The audience can now navigate to specific topics from the front page, by using the drop down categories menu on the right side.

At the end of my project, I also had a lot of technical issues uploading my video to YouTube. After many tries in Firefox, it turned out that the flash player was not updated and it didn’t want to upload for that reason. I switched over to Chrome and it uploaded to YouTube right away. Lastly, I had some issues with the audio. I do not own a microphone so I tried to record my audio on my smart phone and then save to my computer to use in Premiere Pro. When I did that, the audio files were not supported by the program. Therefore, I decided to record myself on my camera and upload to the computer that way.

Before the Internet, radio and TV were two inventions that had, and still have, a huge impact on individuals across the world. Therefore, the focus of this project will be the Broadcasting Network Era in the 1920’s-1950’s, explaining further the details between the social, political and cultural changes between individuals and their families.

Additional Details
At first, I will have some background information about the invention of the radio, followed by the  development and the invention of the television – along with the different ways the two mediums relate. This project will explain the social change radio and television had on the everyday lives of families, the supply of information which led to different interpretations of events across the world from individual to individual, and the different ways individuals utilized the radio and TV for entertainment.

Because radio and TV are still popular in today’s world, I would like to include the evolution of both information technologies, along with the transformation of advertising, and how differently the mediums are utilized today.
